In this article, I want to talk about Why it is Important to Exercise. I know lots of people are aware that exercising is good for them and can improve their health, but most of the people don’t have an idea of how many benefits exercising and being active have.

 

That is why I have decided to write this post and tell you 10 reasons why it is important to exercise.

 

Exercise can brighten your moodBrighten your mood

Feeling stressed and anxious, having a bad day or you are just not in the mood? The best solution to brighten your mood is exercise. While exercising your brain releases endorphins. Endorphins are happiness hormones that make people feel happier after a workout.

 

Exercise increases your strength and mental abilities to learn new things

Regular exercise together with a good diet will increase your strength, stamina, endurance and it will also help improve your mental health. Not sure what is a good diet? Read the Importance of Balanced diet article to know more.

 

Consistent exercise reduces insulin levels, inflammation and stimulate the release of growth factors – chemicals in your brain that are responsible for the health of your brain and growth of new blood vessels in your brain.

 

Many studies have shown that the brain parts responsible for thinking and memory have greater volume in people who exercise instead of people who don’t.

 

Increases self-confidenceIncrease self-confidence

From my experience, I can tell that exercises increase self-confident. If you stay consistent with exercising you will start seeing the results as you get stronger, your weights start increasing and as your body start changing your confidence will grow too. You will believe in yourself more and know that you actually can do it, that you are getting stronger, feeling and looking better.

 

It is a fact that people who have fit body and feel great are a lot more confident around other people.

 

Your body gets stronger

Consistent exercise will increase your muscle mass, and strength. While exercising you break muscles fibres and together with good food and enough sleep (at least 7 hours) your muscle fibres repairs themselves stronger and bigger. The best type of exercise to achieve stronger and grow bigger muscle is weight training.

Increases your immune system

Regular exercise improves your overall fitness, which can help boost your immune system, the body’s defence against infections. Some studies show that even “moderate intensity” exercise may cut down the number of colds you get.

Because exercise increases your heart rate, blood flow, respiratory rate and activity in the sympathetic nervous system, epinephrine and norepinephrine hormones are released into the bloodstream and activate a cellular reaction that suppresses cytokines, including TNF.

 

TNF is responsible for boosting the immune system and killing cancer cells.

While exercising your brain releases chemicals called endorphins and BDNF which are responsible to fight with stress.

 

During a workout, it’s possible to clear your head and forget life trouble and difficulties. Research says that people tend to concentrate on a workout that much, that they don’t think about other and things anymore, they are in that moment, giving their best to their workout.

 

Your skin become healthier

By increasing blood flow, exercise helps nourish skin cells and keep them vital. Blood carries oxygen and nutrients to working cells throughout the body, including the skin. In addition to providing oxygen, blood flow also helps carry away waste products, including free radicals, from working cells.

 

You will look younger

Regular exercise slows down cell aging. Exercise doesn’t just make you feel younger—it may actually slow down the aging process in your chromosomes. You can’t change your chronological age, but you can improve your health, make you feel and look younger.

 

Improved sleepImproved sleep

Exercise can improve the quality and duration of your night sleep. Being physically active requires you to use a lot more energy and that makes you feel more tired at the end of the day. Research says that regular exercise can boost your sleep duration and quality.

 

Physical activity also increases time spent in deep sleep, the most restorative sleep phase, which will help you to feel more rested in the morning.

 

Exercise will help with joint pain and stiffness

Exercise is crucial for people with arthritis. It increases strength and flexibility, reduces joint pain, and helps combat fatigue. Many people think that if they feel pain in their joints they can’t exercise and stop moving at all, which very big mistake is.

 

People should do the opposite and try to move more when they have arthritis or joint pain. You don’t have to run or swim as fast as you can or lift the heaviest weights in the gym, you can start with moderate exercise and slowly increase your intensity as you will start feeling less pain.

 

Reasons why exercise can reduce your joints pain:

  • Strengthen the muscles around your joints.
  • Helps to maintain bone strength.
  • Helps to manage your weight, and less weight is easier on your joints.

Exercise can help to control addictions and I can tell from my experience that once I have started lifting weights I stopped drinking alcohol, because I know that drinking alcohol will ruin all week of my hard work at the gym.

 

 

Alcohol destroys muscle cells and if we drink every weekend and lifting weights during the week, there very little chances that we are going to grow muscle that is the reason why most people stop drinking once they start going to the gym.

Exercise can help fight with sugar addiction too if you will stay active and exercise it will reduce your need for sugar.

 

Final thoughts

These are my top ten benefits of exercising. I think these benefits should be more than enough for people to try to stay active and exercise at least a few times a week. Exercising will improve not just your look, but also will improve health, confidence, sleep quality, and you will notice many other benefits.

 

I want to encourage you to be more active, even it seems hard for you at the beginning. Start slowly and gradually increase your activity level and intensity with time. Very soon you will notice an improvement in your stamina and increased energy levels, try to exercise for 30 days and it should get easier after that.

  • I love your article, as I have a few symptoms that you mentioned. My skin tends to itch frequently and also sleep is an issue where I would wake up several times each night. I have not been doing active exercise, but after reading your post, I would try to exercise more to see if it helps to improve my skin conditions and quality of sleep. Thanks for sharing.

    • Glad you enjoyed my article Jeffery, I think that should really improve your skin and especially sleep quality. but you have to do it for a while to noticed great improvement because some people want and expect results too quickly. They go to the gym once and expect to see improvements straight away, however usually it is not the case, you want to stick with it.   • I found this article very interesting and challenging. As I’m aging I’ve been setting aside more time for exercise on a daily basis and have found many of the benefits you spoke of to be true: sleeping better, decreased joint pain, & hopefully younger looking skin! LOL’
    Two great benefits I received from this article were: 1) that regular exercise boosts your immune system, (we can all use that especially, with all these new super bugs popping up) 2) that people who exercise have larger brain parts in the part of the brain responsible for thinking and memory! I found these aspects interesting and great reasons to exercise regularly.

My favorite and most noticeable benefits from my experience are better sleep, stress relief, improved immune system, and overall better feel and self-confidence. And if you combine exercise with the good and nutritious diet you can see even greater benefits. There are just too many benefits not too exercise, all people should try it and see the benefits themselves.

  • It is good and detailed. I like that you included the hormones exercise activates. In the section on muscle, you could add that it is the muscle that burns calories. So even in women, it will work. Good job!

    • Yes Laura you have it all right, muscle burns calories and the more muscle you have the easier it is to maintain your weight. I have actually was talking about that in my other article about Weight training, saying that weight training is better than cardio because your muscles work a lot harder and that why you burn more calories. After cardio exercises your boy still burns calories up to four hours and after weight training exercises your body burns calories around 24 hours after exercise.

    • Thank you and happy you did enjoy reading my article. Running around a big house is exercise too. Exercises don’t mean that we have to go and spend hours in the gym. It is very good to stay active, going for a walk, doing housework, maybe you have to move a lot at work, if we don’t like to exercises, we have to stay as active as possible.

  • Great post with lots of great reasons to exercise. I have been off work for 2 years with an injury and have finally been placed in a full time OT rehab program. The assessment that I did showed me how much my body needs this exercise program and even the 30 minute walk made me feel amazing!

    I do not think that everyone needs an hour at the gym each day, but a good 30 minute walk will sure help. I know that it lessened my joint stiffness.

    • I hope that exercise helped you to recover and feel better Irma. You could experience yourself how beneficial exercising can be. Exactly I’m not telling people to spend in the gym and lift weights there for hours, but just do what you like most, run, swim, climb the mountain, just choose what you love most. Most important stay active and you will start seeing benefits. I would suggest at least 30-minute walk each day, but if you can walk more it is even better.

    • Hi Delimar, thank you for reading my post. I have very stressful work and very often feeling stressed and anxious and gym and weight lifting is the best medicine for me. Sometimes it seems very hard to go to the gym and I always feel like I’m not up to it, but I still force myself go to the gym and always feel so much better after and feel happy that I did go. Sometimes the hardest part is forcing yourself to go.
